A Stream of Life

Hazel Creek begins modestly as a small spring below the summit of Silers Bald (elev. 5,620). From there it cascades downward through rhododendron tunnels, over moss-covered rocks, past the abandoned settlements of Proctor and Medlin until its confluence with Fontana Lake. Cherokee hunters, pioneer farmers, and loggers have all come and gone from Hazel Creek's valley. Today, as part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it remains the home of black bears, deer, and other wildlife.
